Yami Gautam (born Yami Gautam Dhar on 28 November 1988) is an Indian actress who works mainly in Hindi films. She began in television, made her film debut in a Kannada film, and has become known for female-centred and content-driven projects. Her honours include a National Film Award, two Screen Awards and a Zee Cine Award, along with three Filmfare nominations.
Early life
Gautam was born in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, and grew up in Chandigarh. Her father, Mukesh Gautam, is a Punjabi film director and chief advisor of PTC Network, and her mother is Anjali Gautam. Her younger sister, Surilie Gautam, is also an actress, and she has a younger brother, Ojas.
She has described a disciplined, studious and fairly simple upbringing, removed from the glamour of her father’s profession. As a girl she hoped to join the Indian Administrative Service, and she enrolled in a law honours degree, but at 20 she decided to pursue acting and left full-time study. A few modelling assignments in her late teens had helped her overcome stage nerves.
Television
After moving to Mumbai, Gautam started out on television in Chand Ke Paar Chalo and then played the lead in Raajkumar Aaryyan. Wider recognition came with Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam on Colors. She also took part in the reality shows Meethi Choori No 1 and Kitchen Champion.
Film debut and Vicky Donor
Her first film was the Kannada release Ullasa Utsaha (2010), in which she played the lead. Her Hindi debut followed in Shoojit Sircar’s romantic comedy Vicky Donor (2012), co-starring the newcomer Ayushmann Khurrana, in which she played Ashima Roy, a Bengali woman who marries the title character before learning about his past. The film, John Abraham’s first as producer, was well reviewed and a major commercial success. Gautam shared the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut and was nominated in the same category at the Filmfare Awards.
Supporting roles and mixed results
Her next Hindi films, the romantic comedy Total Siyappa and Prabhu Deva’s Action Jackson (both 2014), underperformed. She fared better in Sriram Raghavan’s thriller Badlapur (2015), alongside Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, which succeeded with critics and at the box office, and her work in it was praised.
The romances Sanam Re and Junooniyat (2016), both opposite Pulkit Samrat, failed. In 2017 she starred opposite Hrithik Roshan in Sanjay Gupta’s revenge thriller Kaabil, which drew mixed-to-positive reviews and did well commercially. She also appeared briefly in Ram Gopal Varma‘s Sarkar 3, with Amitabh Bachchan, and played a lawyer in the social drama Batti Gul Meter Chalu (2018).
Established actress
Her breakthrough came in 2019 with Aditya Dhar’s military action film Uri: The Surgical Strike, opposite Vicky Kaushal, in which she played the intelligence officer Pallavi Sharma. Critics noted that her character stood apart from the film’s more decorative female roles, and the film was a critical and commercial success. The same year she reunited with Khurrana for the satire Bala, another success.
She then made a series of films for streaming platforms, including Bhoot Police (2021), A Thursday and Dasvi (both 2022), and Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga (2023). Theatrical success returned with the satire OMG 2 (2023) and the political thriller Article 370 (2024); the second won her the National Film Award for Best Actress. She was later praised for playing Shah Bano in Haq (2025).
Personal life
Gautam is married to the filmmaker Aditya Dhar. She has also worked as a brand ambassador for several products.
