What the story is about
In a village, the blacksmith Rangaiah works himself to the bone to put his younger brother Venu through college in Madras. Looking for cheap lodgings, Venu meets the kind-hearted public prosecutor Anand Rao, who lets him stay in his summer house for free, passing him off as a married man because his wife will not rent to bachelors; Anand Rao’s daughter Shanti sees through the story and falls for Venu. Back in the village, Shankaraiah has a dissolute son, Kumar, who is courting Rangaiah’s daughter Jaya, and a blind daughter, Radha. When Venu graduates and comes home to arrange his marriage to Shanti, his brother’s failing health and his family’s ties to Shankaraiah’s household force a choice that will shape all their lives.
