Madhumitha (born Swapna Madhuri) is an Indian actress who works in Telugu and Tamil films. She began in supporting roles in Telugu films such as Manmadhudu (2002) and then found leading roles in Tamil cinema, where her performances in Englishkaran (2005), Aanivaer (2007) and Yogi (2009) were praised.
Telugu beginnings
Under her birth name, Swapna Madhuri, she started with a supporting role in Sandade Sandadi (2002), followed by Manmadhudu with Nagarjuna and Sonali Bendre, Ammayilu Abbayilu (2003) and Puttintiki Ra Chelli (2004), a major hit that ran for 275 days.
Tamil debut
R. Parthiban introduced her to Tamil cinema as the female lead of Kudaikul Mazhai (2004), and she took the screen name Madhumitha from her character in it. The film did not do well, but offers followed, including leads in Amudhae (2005) and Englishkaran, opposite Sathyaraj and Namitha, where IndiaGlitz felt she dominated the film.
Acclaimed roles
She played a journalist in the independent film Aanivaer, about the Sri Lankan civil war, which was widely seen across the Tamil diaspora and won her praise. After the comedy Arai En 305-il Kadavul (2008), her role as a young mother in the Chennai slums in Yogi, opposite Ameer, was acclaimed and earned a Vijay Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Later work
After her marriage she took supporting roles in Venkat Prabhu’s Biriyani and the Telugu films Uu Kodathara? Ulikki Padathara?, Maine Pyar Kiya and Bhale Bhale Magadivoy.
