Neil Nitin Mukesh (born 15 January 1982) is an Indian actor and producer who works mainly in Hindi films. The son of the playback singer Nitin Mukesh and grandson of the singer Mukesh, he appeared as a child actor in the late 1980s before making his adult debut in the title role of Johnny Gaddaar (2007). He is known for New York (2009), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) and Golmaal Again (2017), and has also worked in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema, including Kavacham (2018) and Saaho (2019).

Early life

He was born in Bombay, now Mumbai, and was named by Lata Mangeshkar after the American astronaut Neil Armstrong. As a child he played the younger versions of Rishi Kapoor’s and Govinda’s characters in Vijay (1988) and Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharnii (1989).

At his father’s insistence he completed a commerce degree at HR College in Mumbai, but he chose acting over the family tradition of singing, describing singing as a hobby and acting as his passion. He trained at a four-month workshop at the Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting Institute and was also coached by the actor Anupam Kher.

Debut

His first film as an adult lead was Sriram Raghavan’s thriller Johnny Gaddaar (2007), in which he played a crook. Critics praised his performance and he was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, though the film did not do well commercially. His next film, the science-fiction thriller Aa Dekhen Zara (2009), was a critical and commercial failure.

Breakthrough

His breakthrough came with Kabir Khan’s New York (2009), a drama about the aftermath of 9/11 co-starring John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Irrfan Khan. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning over ₹610 million worldwide according to the source, and his performance brought a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Later that year Madhur Bhandarkar’s prison drama Jail failed commercially, but critics praised both the film and his performance.

In 2010 he played a fighter in Lafangey Parindey opposite Deepika Padukone, a moderate success in which his understated performance was appreciated.

Later Hindi films

In Vishal Bhardwaj’s 7 Khoon Maaf (2011), which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, he played Priyanka Chopra’s first husband, a jealous army officer, and was praised even though the film struggled commercially. He took a villainous role in the heist thriller Players (2012), which drew mixed to negative reviews, and his three films of 2013, including Bejoy Nambiar’s David, were commercially unsuccessful. His later Hindi films include Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) and Golmaal Again (2017).

South Indian films

Mukesh made his Tamil debut with Kaththi (2014) and his Telugu debut with Kavacham (2018). The following year he was part of the ensemble cast of Saaho, an action film shot simultaneously in Telugu and Hindi and led by Prabhas, alongside Shraddha Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Chunky Panday. His Malayalam debut came with Khalifa: The Ruler (2026).
