Vamsy (born Nallamilli Bavireddy on 20 November 1956) is an Indian film director, screenwriter, writer, composer, poet, producer, actor and cartoonist in Telugu cinema and television. His breakthrough came with Sitaara (1984), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. He is also a prolific short-story writer.
Early life and writing
Vamsy was born in Balabhadrapuram, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. He began writing stories at 15. Before entering films, he wrote two novels, Manchu Pallaki and Karma Sakshi, which were published in Andhra Jyothy Weekly.
Assistant director
Vamsy worked as an assistant director to V. Madhusudhana Rao in Madras on many films. He also assisted K. Viswanath on Sankarabharanam and Bharathiraja on Seethakoka Chilaka.
Director
His first film as director, Manchupallaki (1982), was a remake of the Tamil film Palaivana Solai. In 1984 he made the acclaimed Sitaara, adapted from his own novel Mahal lo Kokila and marking Bhanupriya’s first role. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. He followed it with Preminchu Pelladu (1985). He worked closely with the composer Ilaiyaraaja for many years. The two understood each other so well that Vamsy shot the song “Ekkada Ekkada” for Ladies Tailor before the music had been recorded.
Television
Vamsy directed the ethnographic film Bommarshi Bapu, which won a Nandi Award for Best Director (documentary) in 1996. He also made the TV serials Lady Detective and Sneha for ETV.
Literature
His literary works include the collection Maa Pasalapudi Kathalu and books such as Aa Naati Vaana Chinukulu, Venditera Kathalu and Rangularatnam. He has written around 360 short stories for Swathi weekly under the title Maa Diguwa Godavari Kathalu. For his storytelling with a native flavour, he received the Sripada Puraskhaara in Rajamundry on 17 April 2011.
