Charmy Kaur (born 17 May 1987), whose name is also spelt Charmme or Charmi, is an Indian film producer and former actress. She worked mainly in Telugu cinema, with a few films in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi, and her better-known films include Mass (2004), Anukokunda Oka Roju (2005), Lakshmi (2006), Pournami (2006) and Rakhi (2006). She has won two Nandi Awards. Since 2019 she has worked only as a producer, chiefly with director Puri Jagannadh.
Early films
Charmy made her acting debut at the age of 15 in the Telugu film Nee Thodu Kavali (2002), playing a housewife. The film failed commercially but brought her to the notice of the South Indian film industry. She then acted in T. Rajendar’s Tamil film Kadhal Azhivathillai, alongside Silambarasan, and around the same time in Kattuchembakam, a Malayalam film directed by Vinayan.
Return to Telugu
She came back to Telugu films with Neeke Manasichaanu, followed by Krishna Vamsi‘s Sri Anjaneyam and the drama Chanti, in which she was paired with Ravi Teja. Her big break in Telugu came with Gowri, opposite Sumanth. She was paired with Ravi Teja again in Ram Gopal Varma‘s Dongala Mutha.
Awards and notable roles
Anukokunda Oka Roju won her the Santosham Best Actress Award in 2005. Her performance in Mantra (2007) earned her the Nandi Award for Best Actress, and Mangala (2011) brought her a Nandi Special Jury Award. In between she appeared in Manorama (2009) and Kavya’s Diary (2009). She also acted alongside Amitabh Bachchan in the Hindi film Bbuddah… Hoga Terra Baap.
Later acting work
She made special appearances in films including Dhamarukam, Naayak and Yaare Koogadali, and appeared in the Hindi films Zila Ghaziabad and R… Rajkumar. She produced and starred in Jyothi Lakshmi (2015), directed by Puri Jagannadh. Her next film, Pratighatana, in which she played a journalist, was her 50th.
Producer with Puri Connects
Charmy went on to co-produce Rogue, a Telugu–Kannada bilingual that introduced the actor Ishan, and Paisa Vasool, starring Nandamuri Balakrishna. Like Jyothi Lakshmi, both were directed by Puri Jagannadh, who founded Puri Connects, a production house that also handles events, marketing, design and talent management. Under the Puri Connects banner she co-produced Mehbooba with Puri, who directed the film and co-produced it through Puri Jagannadh Touring Talkies to launch his son Akash Puri.
In May 2019 she announced that she had given up acting and would continue working as a film producer.
