Bala Nagamma is a 1942 Telugu film directed by C. Pullayya and produced by S. S. Vasan of Gemini Studios, based on one of the most popular burrakatha tales. Kanchanamala plays the princess Bala Nagamma, with Govindarajula Subba Rao as the sorcerer who abducts her. It was one of Gemini’s successful early Telugu films and, according to film historian Randor Guy, earned a profit of ₹40 lakh.
What the story is about
Queen Bhulakshmi, wife of King Navabhoja Raju, prays to the sage Jatangi Muni for children and is blessed with seven children, the youngest of whom is Bala Nagamma. Soon after Bala Nagamma is married to Karyavardhi Raju, she is abducted by Mayala Marathi, a sorcerer, who carries her off to his cave at Nagullapudi Gattu. There she holds him at bay through her devotions while the years of her captivity pass, and the film follows the long search for her.

Gemini remade it in Hindi as Bahut Din Huwe (1954), starring Madhubala, and the story was filmed again in Telugu in 1959 under the same title, directed by Vedantam Raghavayya.
