Tarun Kumar (born 8 January 1981), known as Tarun, is an Indian actor who works mainly in Telugu cinema, with a few Tamil and Malayalam films. As a child he won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for Mani Ratnam’s Anjali (1990) and three Nandi Awards, and as an adult lead he starred in hits such as Nuvve Kavali (2000), Priyamaina Neeku (2001) and Nuvve Nuvve (2002).
Family
Tarun is the son of the actors Roja Ramani and Chakrapani. His mother, from Rajahmundry, acted in Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil films and was a leading Telugu dubbing artist in the 1980s and 1990s; his father, whose roots are in Palasa, Srikakulam, acted in Odia and Telugu films.
Child actor
He began with Manasu Mamatha (1990) and, as a fan of Mani Ratnam, played Shamlee’s brother in Anjali, winning the national award. He won Nandi Awards for Best Child Actor for Manasu Mamatha, Pillalu Diddina Kapuram (1991) and Teja (1992), a Japanese festival award for the Malayalam Abhayam (1991), and appeared in Thalapathi and Aditya 369 (both 1991).
Leading man
After commercials, including a Fanta advertisement with Richa Pallod, K. Vijaya Bhaskar cast him in Nuvve Kavali, a remake of the Malayalam Niram. It ran for more than a hundred days, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu, and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut – South. Priyamaina Neeku, Nuvvu Leka Nenu Lenu and Nuvve Nuvve were successes.
Tamil films
He made his Tamil debut with Punnagai Desam (2002), but after the bilingual Enakku 20 Unakku 18 failed he stopped taking Tamil films.
Later films
Nava Vasantham (2007) and Sasirekha Parinayam (2009) were his last successes. After a four-year gap he returned in low-key releases such as Yuddham, Veta (both 2014) and Idi Naa Love Story (2018).
