Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu (meaning “Rambabu with Cameraman Ganga”) is a 2012 Telugu-language political action film written and directed by Puri Jagannadh and produced by D. V. V. Danayya. It stars Pawan Kalyan, Tamannaah Bhatia, Gabriela Bertante, Prakash Raj and Kota Srinivasa Rao. It was Pawan Kalyan’s second film with Puri, twelve years after Badri, and was released on 18 October 2012 to positive reviews.

Story

Rambabu is a short-tempered but kind-hearted mechanic who reacts strongly to the injustices he sees in the news. Ganga, a cameraperson at a news channel, notices him and offers him a job as a journalist. His new role soon brings him up against a former chief minister who is trying to topple the government, and his ruthless son, a newcomer to politics.

Cast

  • Pawan Kalyan as Rambabu, a news reporter
  • Tamannaah Bhatia, the female lead
  • Gabriela Bertante as the second female lead
  • Prakash Raj, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Brahmanandam, Ali and Tanikella Bharani
  • Scarlett Wilson in a song

Production and music

Puri announced in January 2012 that Pawan Kalyan had agreed to a second film, which began shooting in mid-June 2012 after Gabbar Singh, mainly in Hyderabad, and wrapped by late September. It was Puri’s 25th film. Mani Sharma composed the six songs, with lyrics by Bhaskarabhatla, and Shyam K. Naidu was the cinematographer.

Release

The film opened on more than 1,500 screens on 18 October 2012. From the second day, protests by supporters of the Telangana movement, who objected to certain scenes, stopped screenings in many theatres in the region, and a government-appointed committee recommended cuts and changes to nine scenes.

Reception

Critics largely praised Pawan Kalyan’s powerful screen presence and Puri’s dialogue. The Times of India called it cheesy but entertaining, Idlebrain praised his explosive performance while noting a weak villain, and 123telugu found it a great watch for those interested in politics.

  • Idlebrain (Jeevi) credited Pawan Kalyan's explosive performance and Puri Jagannadh's dialogue, but missed a strong villain.
  • 123telugu (Mahesh S. Koneru) said the film works mainly on its star's force, and a better script would have helped.
  • Oneindia Entertainment (Shekhar) praised Puri's presentation of the subject and the lead performance.

Box office: the article reports ₹13.5 crore on the opening day in India and a worldwide gross of ₹59.8 crore.
