Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is a 2019 Telugu-language epic historical action drama directed by Surender Reddy and produced by Ram Charan under the Konidela Production Company banner. A work of fiction inspired by the life of the independence activist Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy of the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, it stars Chiranjeevi in the title role and follows Narasimha Reddy’s fight against the rule of the British East India Company. Although reviews were positive, the film was a major box-office failure.

Story

The film opens in 1857, with the Indian subcontinent in revolt against the East India Company. As Jhansi comes under British siege and its soldiers begin to lose heart, Rani Lakshmi Bai rallies them with the story of the rebel who had started their fight a decade earlier: Narasimha Reddy.

That story forms the body of the film. The son of the chief of Uyyalawada, Reddy sees as a teenager how villagers suffer under the Company’s rule and vows to resist it, training in combat and philosophy under the sage Gosayi Venkanna. Years later he unites a number of chiefs and kings who have lost their lands to the British and builds an organised resistance, drawing the attention of the Company’s authorities in Madras. The film follows the growth of that uprising and the rivalries, loyalties and personal ties that shape it, and this summary leaves its course for the viewer.

Cast

Chiranjeevi leads as Narasimha Reddy. The ensemble includes:

Amitabh Bachchan, in his first Telugu film, and Anushka Shetty make guest appearances. The narration was voiced by different stars for different language versions: Pawan Kalyan, Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal.

Development

Surender Reddy wrote the script from an original story by the Paruchuri brothers. The project was announced by Ram Charan after the success of his father Chiranjeevi’s Khaidi No. 150 (2017), and it was formally launched on 22 August 2017, Chiranjeevi’s birthday.

Filming

Principal photography began on 6 December 2017 and finished on 24 June 2019. The film was shot in Hyderabad and Kerala, with some scenes filmed in Georgia. R. Rathnavelu was the cinematographer and A. Sreekar Prasad the editor.

Music

The songs were composed by Amit Trivedi, while Julius Packiam wrote the background score.

What critics said

  • The Week (Rahul Devulapalli) advised viewers to “Mute your fact-checker before you enter the cinema”, praising Chiranjeevi and the battle scenes.
  • Firstpost (Hemanth Kumar) valued its telling of a rebellion never before explored in Telugu cinema, but found character development weak.
  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) wrote that the makers use cinematic liberties to fit a crowd-pleasing format, with a memorable Chiranjeevi despite drawn-out war sequences.
  • DNA India praised its storytelling and visuals.

Box office: the article reports ₹81.4 crore worldwide on the first day and ₹124.80 crore within five days.
