Uu Kodathara? Ulikki Padathara? (transl. Will You Be Shocked? Or Will You Be Scared?), commonly called UKUP, is a 2012 Indian Telugu-language fantasy action comedy directed by Sekhar Raja and produced by Lakshmi Manchu. It stars Nandamuri Balakrishna, Manoj Manchu, Deeksha Seth, Lakshmi Manchu and Sonu Sood. It was released worldwide on 27 July 2012 to mixed-to-negative reviews, though Balakrishna’s performance was praised.
Story
Gandharva Mahal, a palace that has belonged to the Rudramaneni dynasty for centuries, has fallen on hard times. Its heir, Rayudu, lives in the outhouse with his family and rents out portions of the palace to make ends meet, and some tenants take advantage of his generosity. Then Manoj, an energetic young man, moves in as a tenant and sets about scaring the troublemakers with a fake horror act.
Production
Manoj Manchu called the film his dream project. He and Lakshmi Manchu set up Manchu Entertainments to produce it. Sekhar Raja, a former assistant to Krishna Vamsi, directed, and Lakshmi Bhupal wrote the dialogue. The film was announced on 6 June 2011, and regular shooting began on 2 August 2011. Balakrishna agreed to play Zamindar Narsimha Rayudu. According to the source, a Gandharva Mahal set costing more than ₹6.5 crore was built, and over half the film was shot there.
Music
Bobo Shashi composed the songs, with one by Vidyasagar, and S. Chinna composed the background score. The soundtrack, with lyrics by R. Ramu, was released by Aditya Music at Shilpakala Vedika on 30 May 2012.
Release
The film opened in more than 60 theatres in Hyderabad alone. A Tamil version, Varuvan Thalaivan, with reshot scenes, was not released after the Telugu version’s poor performance.
Reception
Idlebrain gave it 3.25 out of 5 and welcomed a big star taking on a story-driven role. 123Telugu gave it 3, praising Balakrishna and the final 25 minutes, and The Times of India gave it 2.5, saying it succeeded only in parts.
