Janhvi Kapoor (born 6 March 1997) is an Indian actress who works mainly in Hindi films. The daughter of the actress Sridevi and the producer Boney Kapoor, she made her debut in 2018 with the romantic drama Dhadak, a commercial success. She has twice been nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, and has more recently worked in Telugu cinema as the leading lady of Devara: Part 1 (2024) and Peddi (2026).
Background and training
Kapoor was born in Mumbai. Her grandfather was the filmmaker Surinder Kapoor, and the actors Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor are her uncles. Her younger sister, Khushi, is also an actress, and she has two half-siblings, the actor Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor. She studied at Ecole Mondiale World School in Mumbai and, before her first film, took an acting course at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in California.
Debut
Her first film was Shashank Khaitan’s Dhadak (2018), produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and co-starring Ishaan Khatter. A Hindi remake of the Marathi film Sairat, it cast her as a young woman whose life takes a tragic turn after she elopes. Reviews of the film were largely negative and opinions of her performance were split, but according to the source it collected ₹1.1 billion worldwide and was a commercial success. She won the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut.
Leading roles, 2020–2022
In 2020 she appeared in Zoya Akhtar’s segment of the Netflix anthology Ghost Stories and then played the title role in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, a biopic of the air force pilot, which went straight to Netflix because of the pandemic. To prepare, she spent time with Saxena, trained physically and studied an air force officer’s body language. The role earned her first Filmfare nomination for Best Actress.
The comedy horror Roohi (2021) was poorly received and did badly at the box office. In 2022 she led Good Luck Jerry, a remake of a Tamil film released on streaming, and Mili, a remake of the Malayalam film Helen, playing a young woman trapped in a freezer. Mili failed commercially but brought her a second Filmfare nomination for Best Actress.
Setbacks
Her next films struggled. Bawaal (2023), opposite Varun Dhawan, was released digitally and drew backlash over its treatment of the Holocaust. In 2024 she reunited with Rajkummar Rao for the sports drama Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, during which she dislocated her shoulder twice while filming cricket scenes, and played an Indian Foreign Service officer in the political thriller Ulajh, a project in which she said she felt more involved creatively than before. Neither film succeeded commercially.
Telugu cinema
Also in 2024, Kapoor made her Telugu debut with a brief role opposite N. T. Rama Rao Jr. in Koratala Siva‘s action film Devara: Part 1. Critics felt the part gave her little to do, but the film grossed over ₹5 billion according to the source, making it her first commercial success since Dhadak and the highest-grossing film of her career. She followed it with a second Telugu action drama, Peddi (2026), in which her role again drew criticism for its limited prominence in a male-dominated story.
Recent work
She also took a supporting role in Homebound (2025), playing a woman facing social discrimination.
