Maruthi Dasari, usually credited as Maruthi, is an Indian film director, screenwriter and producer in Telugu cinema. He started out with the low-budget films Ee Rojullo and Bus Stop (both 2012), which were liked for their youthful themes and relatable humour. He went on to direct the hit Bhale Bhale Magadivoy (2015) and the Prabhas film The RajaSaab (2026).
Early life
After moving to Hyderabad, Maruthi first worked as an animator and also painted number plates and signboards to support himself.
Low-budget beginnings
His directing debut, Ee Rojullo (2012), drew positive reviews. According to the source, it was made for ₹50 lakh and grossed over ₹10 crore, making it one of the most successful Telugu films of 2012. His second film, Bus Stop, came out in November 2012 and was also a hit.
Producer and writer
In 2013 Maruthi wrote and produced Prema Katha Chitram under Maruthi Talkies, giving his cinematographer J. Prabhakar Reddy his first chance to direct. The source says it was a surprise hit that grossed ₹20 crore. He also produced films such as Romance, Villa-2, Love You Bangaram and Green Signal, and he wrote the screenplay for the well-reviewed Bhadram Be Careful Brotheru. A 2014 project called Radha, with Venkatesh and Nayanthara, was shelved after a writer accused him of copying a story.
Bhale Bhale Magadivoy and later films
He went on to direct Kotha Janta with Allu Sirish and Babu Bangaram with Venkatesh. His biggest success came with Bhale Bhale Magadivoy (2015), a romantic comedy about an absent-minded scientist starring Nani. It was a major hit and won Nani a Filmfare Critics Award. Maruthi said he wanted to tell the story of a man who thinks a flaw makes him unworthy of love. His other films include Mahanubhavudu and Prati Roju Pandage, both scored by S. Thaman.
The RajaSaab
In 2022 Maruthi pitched a horror-comedy script to Prabhas, the start of their first film together. He called it a golden opportunity to direct a star like Prabhas. The RajaSaab was released for Sankranti in January 2026 and was shot on what the source calls the largest indoor film set ever built in India. It received largely negative reviews and was a box-office failure.
