Pakka Commercial

Pakka Commercial (transl. “Purely commercial”) is a 2022 Telugu courtroom action comedy written and directed by Maruthi and produced by UV Creations and GA2 Pictures, starring Gopichand and Raashii Khanna, with Sathyaraj and Rao Ramesh. Jakes Bejoy composed the music. It released in theatres on 1 July 2022 to mixed reviews. Our record lists a running time of 152 minutes.

What the story is about

Suryanarayana is a dutiful judge who resigns after failing to deliver justice to Amulya, a young woman blackmailed by a rich man named Vivek. He takes to running a shop to support his family. Years later his son Ramachandra, “Lucky”, inspired as a boy by his father’s law books and coat, has become an advocate, but one who stands for everything his father did not: he settles cases out of court for his own profit, and Suryanarayana has no idea. When an actress called Jhansi, researching a lawyer role, attaches herself to Lucky, and Suryanarayana takes up a case against a corrupt developer and politician who turns out to be Vivek, father and son end up on opposite sides, with their home literally split into “Commercial” and “Non-Commercial” halves.

Making of the film

The film was announced, with its title, in February 2021. Sai Pallavi was in talks for the lead in January, but Raashii Khanna was cast in February 2021, her third film with Gopichand after Jil (2015) and Oxygen (2017) and her second with Maruthi after Prati Roju Pandage (2019). Anasuya Bharadwaj also joined the cast. Shooting began in Hyderabad in March 2021 and was paused in April by the second COVID-19 wave. Aditya Music bought the music rights. The release slipped from 1 October 2021 to 24 February 2022 and 20 May 2022 before the film finally opened on 1 July.

Reviews and business

Reviews were mixed. Neeshita Nyayapati of The Times of India gave it 3 out of 5 but said it is “really not his best work” from Maruthi. Arvind V of Pinkvilla (2.5/5) found “a few good ideas” amid “a sea of mundane ideas”, and Sangeetha Devi Dundoo of The Hindu called it commercial but far from entertaining. Balakrishna Ganeshan of The News Minute gave it 1.5 out of 5, though he found Gopichand, Sathyaraj and Rao Ramesh convincing and credited Raashii Khanna for succeeding with comedy.

According to News18, the worldwide theatrical distribution rights were sold for ₹19.20 crore, and the digital and satellite rights together for ₹31 crore. News18 also reported on its final collections when the theatrical run ended, but Wikipedia does not carry the figure.
