Tiger Nageswara Rao is a 2023 Indian Telugu-language period action thriller written and directed by Vamsee and produced by Abhishek Agarwal. Ravi Teja plays the title role, a notorious thief of the 1970s. The cast includes Anupam Kher, Jisshu Sengupta, Nupur Sanon, Renu Desai in her comeback, Gayatri Bhardwaj and Murali Sharma. Released on 20 October 2023 to mixed reviews, it was, according to the source, a box-office failure.

Story

Senior intelligence and police officials meet to discuss Tiger Nageswara Rao, a thief who dominated Stuartpuram in the 1970s. The film then goes back to 1956, when young Nagi grows up poor under a powerful local gangster. It traces how he is drawn into crime and trained by the region’s criminal mentor, and how he grows into a legend.

Development

Vamsee said in December 2017 that he wanted to make a film about Tiger Nageswara Rao. Rana Daggubati and later Nani were rumoured for the role before Vamsee narrated a script to Ravi Teja in 2021, while the actor was shooting Khiladi. On 3 November that year, Abhishek Agarwal Arts formally announced the project. G. V. Prakash Kumar was signed as composer, R. Madhi as cinematographer and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao as editor.

Filming

Principal photography began in 2022 on a five-acre site near Shamshabad and in Hyderabad. Ravi Teja was injured during an action scene and returned after recovering. Nupur Sanon and Anupam Kher joined in 2022, and filming wrapped in July 2023.

Music and release

G. V. Prakash Kumar’s singles included “Ek Dum Ek Dum” and “Veedu”. The film was released on 20 October 2023 with dubbed versions in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam. It began streaming on Amazon Prime Video on 17 November 2023, and a trimmed Hindi version drew large viewership on YouTube.

Reception

Most critics were negative. The Indian Express and India Today gave it 2 out of 5, finding it unconvincing and poorly paced. The News Minute said presenting a sensitive subject in a commercial format without nuance made it a lousy film, and Rediff gave it 1 out of 5 despite praising Ravi Teja’s energy.
