Jisshu Sengupta (born Biswaroop Sengupta, 15 March 1977) is an Indian actor, producer and television presenter who works mainly in Bengali films, with a few in Telugu, Hindi and Kannada. After a television debut as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and a difficult start in films, he became one of the most sought-after actors in Bengali cinema through his work with Rituparno Ghosh and in films such as Jaatishwar, Rajkahini (2015) and Byomkesh Bakshi.
Early life
Jisshu Sengupta was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), the son of the Bengali actor Ujjwal Sengupta. In 2004 he married Nilanjana Sharma, the elder daughter of the actress Anjana Bhowmick; they have two daughters, Sara and Zara.
Television debut and early films
He began with the Doordarshan series Mahaprabhu (1998), winning acclaim as the young Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. His film debut, Dinen Sengupta’s Priyojon (1999), failed, and in 2002 he played the young Tagore in Sukanta Roy’s Chelebela, followed by a string of unsuccessful leads. He found more success in second-lead roles in commercial films, and appeared as a parallel lead in Moner Majhe Tumi, the highest-grossing film of 2003 in Bangladesh. He made his Hindi debut in Shyam Benegal’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero (2004).
Rituparno Ghosh and success
Meeting the director Rituparno Ghosh made him more selective. Under Ghosh he gave acclaimed performances in The Last Lear, Shob Charitro Kalponik (2008), which won the National Film Award for Best Bengali Feature Film, Abohomaan, in which he played a betrayed husband, and Chitrangada, where The Times of India called his turn as a junkie one of his finest. He also led Ghosh’s Noukadubi.
Later Bengali and Hindi films
Srijit Mukherji’s musical drama Jaatishwar (2014) was a critical and commercial success, as were Anjan Dutt’s Byomkesh Bakshi (2015), in which he played the detective, and Mukherji’s Rajkahini, in which he played a contract killer. The action drama Zulfiqar (2016) was his biggest commercial success. In Hindi he had roles in Barfi!, Mardaani and Piku, played Gangadhar Rao in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019), and appeared in Shakuntala Devi, Sadak 2 and Durgamati (all 2020). In 2025 he returned to Bangladeshi cinema with Borbaad, with Shakib Khan.
Television and sport
He produced the Star Jalsha serial Aparajito (2011) and has hosted award shows including Filmfare Awards East (2017) and reality shows such as Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Super Singer and the comedy series Hasiwala and Company. A keen cricketer, he captained the Bengal Tigers in the Celebrity Cricket League, which won the 2024 edition, and conceived the Bengal Cricket League. Calcutta Times named him its Most Desirable Man in 2015.
