Prabhas (Uppalapati Venkata Suryanarayana Prabhas Raju) is an Indian actor who works mainly in Telugu cinema. Known in the media as “Rebel Star”, he became a nationwide name through S. S. Rajamouli’s two Baahubali films, and is described by Wikipedia as the first Indian actor to have a film gross over ₹1000 crore worldwide.
He was born on 23 October 1979 in Madras (now Chennai), according to Wikipedia, citing The Indian Express, and Wikidata. His father was the film producer Uppalapati Surya Narayana Raju, and he is the nephew of the actor Krishnam Raju.
Career
Prabhas made his debut in Eeshwar (2002) and had his breakthrough with the action romance Varsham (2004), one of the year’s top Telugu grossers, which brought his first Filmfare nomination. S. S. Rajamouli’s Chhatrapati (2005) followed, along with Pournami (2006) and Yogi and Munna (both 2007), which met a lukewarm response.
Puri Jagannadh’s Bujjigadu (2008) returned him to box-office success, and he played a dual role in Billa (2009). Darling (2010) and Mr. Perfect (2011) were successful romantic films, and Koratala Siva’s Mirchi (2013) won him the Nandi Award for Best Actor.
In Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) he played Shivudu/Mahendra Baahubali and Amarendra Baahubali. He gave about five years to the two films. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) became the first Indian film to gross over ₹1,000 crore worldwide, as reported by Box Office India, and won him the SIIMA Award for Best Actor – Telugu. That year he became the first South Indian actor with a wax figure at Madame Tussauds (The Indian Express).
After Baahubali he concentrated on large multilingual films. Saaho (2019) opened to mixed reviews; its Hindi version was a hit while the Telugu version underperformed. Radhe Shyam (2022) and Adipurush (2023), in which he played Raghava (Lord Ram), were box-office failures. Prashanth Neel’s Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire (2023) was his comeback, and Nag Ashwin’s science-fiction epic Kalki 2898 AD (2024) passed ₹1100 crore worldwide (The Indian Express), his second film past ₹1,000 crore.
In 2025 he appeared in an extended cameo as Rudra in Kannappa, and the two Baahubali films were re-released as a single feature, Baahubali: The Epic, on 31 October 2025. Maruthi’s horror-comedy The RajaSaab, released on 9 January 2026, received a mixed-to-negative reception and, according to Wikipedia, was a box-office failure.
