Sumanth (born Yarlagadda Sumanth Kumar, 9 February 1975) is an Indian actor who works mainly in Telugu cinema. The eldest grandson of Akkineni Nageswara Rao and a partner in Annapurna Studios, he debuted in Ram Gopal Varma‘s Prema Katha (1999) and is known for films such as Satyam (2003), Gowri (2004), Godavari (2006), Madhumasam (2007), Golconda High School (2011), Malli Raava (2017) and Anaganaga (2025).
Family and education
Sumanth was born in Hyderabad to the producer Surendra Yarlagadda and Satyavathi Akkineni. When his parents returned to the United States a few months after his birth, he stayed in India at the request of his grandfather, who wanted to raise his first grandchild himself. Nagarjuna is his uncle, and Naga Chaitanya, Akhil Akkineni and Sushanth are his cousins; his sister, Supriya, is an actress and producer. He studied at the Hyderabad Public School, then engineering in Michigan, before graduating in film studies from Columbia College Chicago in 1997.
Early films
Prema Katha was not a commercial success but was acclaimed and won five Nandi Awards, including Best Feature Film. Yuvakudu (2000) is now considered underrated, and several films after it did poorly. His breakthrough came with Satyam (2003), in which he played a struggling lyricist to strong reviews, followed by the hit Gowri (2004), a remake of the Tamil Thirumalai.
Godavari and after
Sekhar Kammula‘s Godavari (2006) remains one of his most acclaimed films; it was a critical and commercial success and won five Nandi Awards and a Filmfare Award. Madhumasam (2007) ran for 100 days. In Mohana Krishna Indraganti’s sports drama Golconda High School his role as a cricket coach was called his career best, though several failures followed.
Malli Raava
The romantic drama Malli Raava (2017), directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, was a hit and his best-reviewed film in years.
Recent work
He played his grandfather Akkineni Nageswara Rao in NTR: Kathanayakudu (2019), to high praise, and had supporting roles in the hits Sita Ramam and Vaathi. His streaming film Anaganaga (2025) was a major hit, with The Hindu calling it one of his finest performances. He also dubbed Ranveer Singh’s role in the Telugu version of 83.
