Sekhar Kammula (born 4 February 1972) is an Indian film director, screenwriter and producer who works in Telugu cinema. His debut, the independent film Dollar Dreams (2000), won the National Film Award for Best First Film of a Director, and he went on to make well-regarded films such as Anand (2004), Godavari (2006), Happy Days (2007), Leader (2010), Fidaa (2017), Love Story (2021) and Kuberaa (2025). He has won two Filmfare Awards South and six Nandi Awards, and was part of the delegation representing South Indian cinema at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

Early life and education

Kammula was born in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, and grew up in Hyderabad. He studied mechanical engineering at Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology and earned a master’s in computer science from Rutgers University. After about three years in the IT industry he took an MFA in film at Howard University in Washington, D.C., working on several short and feature films in the United States.

Early films

Dollar Dreams, made in Telugu and English, was a critical success and was screened at IFFI. His second film, Anand, was one of the top Telugu grossers of 2004, while Godavari was acclaimed but only broke even; both have since gained large cult followings and are counted among the greatest Telugu films. Happy Days (2007), about the lives of engineering students, was a big hit with urban young audiences and was remade in Tamil and Kannada.

Leader and the 2010s

The political drama Leader (2010), starring Rana Daggubati, drew good reviews but barely broke even; it too has gained a cult following and resurfaces at election time. He wrote, produced and directed Life Is Beautiful (2012), his first production, and directed Anaamika (2014), a remake of Kahaani with Nayanthara, which failed. Fidaa (2017), with Varun Tej and Sai Pallavi, was a return to form; the source says it grossed over ₹90 crore.

Recent films

Love Story (2021), with Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, was an above-average grosser, and the social thriller Kuberaa (2025), with Dhanush, Nagarjuna and Rashmika Mandanna, was well reviewed and became his highest-grossing film.

Style

His films focus on everyday relationships between men and women, and critics have noted his grounded, unconventional female characters; Kammula has said he prefers to keep his characters real rather than commercialise them.
