Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao is an Indian film director, producer, actor and writer from Andhra Pradesh. Known as a remake specialist and a maker of parody films, he has hits including Subhamastu, Subhakankshalu, Suswagatham and Suryavamsam. He produced Nee Thodu Kavali and made his acting debut in Kudirithe Cup Coffee.

Early life

He was born into a farming family in Tathapudi village, Guntur district. He went to school in Tathapudi, Murikipudi and Martur and attended college in Chilakaluripet.

Assistant director

He started out as an assistant director to T. Krishna on Vande Mataram, Devalayam and Repati Pourulu.

Suswagatham

He directed Suswagatham (1998), Pawan Kalyan‘s third film, produced by R. B. Choudary under Super Good Films. It marked the Telugu debut of Devayani, and S. A. Rajkumar composed the music. Pawan Kalyan played a young man who loses everything because of his blind love for a girl, and his performance was critically acclaimed. It was the first film to credit him as “Power Star”, and it became a super hit that laid the ground for his rise to stardom.

Sudigadu

In 2012 he directed Sudigadu, starring Allari Naresh. Made up of spoofs of nearly 100 Telugu films, it did exceptionally well at the box office and cemented Naresh’s position in Telugu cinema.

Later remakes

He directed Speedunnodu (2016), a remake of the Tamil Sundarapandian starring Bellamkonda Sreenivas, which drew mixed reviews. He followed it with Kousalya Krishnamurthy (2019), a remake of the Tamil sports drama Kanaa. That film marked the Telugu debut of Aishwarya Rajesh, and critics called it a thought-provoking subject weakened by clichéd presentation.
