Manmadhudu 2 (meaning “Cupid 2”) is a 2019 Telugu-language romantic comedy directed by Rahul Ravindran and produced by Nagarjuna and P. Kiran under Annapurna Studios, Anandi Art Creations and Viacom18 Studios. It stars Nagarjuna and Rakul Preet Singh. An official remake of the French film I Do (2006) and a spiritual successor to Nagarjuna’s Manmadhudu (2002), it received mixed to negative reviews and failed at the box office.

Story

Sam, an ageing bachelor and perfumer living in Portugal, has sworn off marriage after a painful break-up in his youth and prefers casual flings. When his mother and three sisters give him three months to marry, he hires a young woman, Avantika, to pose as his fiancée and then jilt him at the altar so his family will give up. Avantika, who needs money for reasons of her own, agrees, but the plan becomes complicated as the family grows fond of her and the two start to fall for each other.

Cast

  • Nagarjuna and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead roles
  • Vennela Kishore, whose comedy was widely praised

Cameo appearances:

  • Samantha Ruth Prabhu as a girl Sam meets on a bridge
  • Keerthy Suresh as Suma, Sam’s ex-girlfriend
  • Akshara Gowda as a girl Sam meets at a bar

  • Sudhanshu Pandey as Amit, Avantika’s ex-boyfriend

Production

Nagarjuna bought the remake rights to I Do. The film was launched with a puja at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad on 25 March 2019, attended by Naga Chaitanya, Amala Akkineni, Sumanth and Sushanth. Important scenes were shot in Portugal, including Lisbon, and Switzerland.

Music

Chaitan Bharadwaj composed the music, released on the Aditya Music label.

What critics said

Reviews cited in the article were mixed: critics enjoyed Vennela Kishore's comedy but felt the film did not explore its themes deeply.

  • The Times of India called it a hilarious entertainer, especially Vennela Kishore's comedy, despite a weak climax.
  • India Today felt it “barely scratches the surface”, with only its one-liners to take away.
  • Firstpost felt director Rahul Ravindran does not dig into the more meaningful films it could have been.
  • The Indian Express noted a regressive family and a womanising hero, but said the film is not crass.
  • The New Indian Express called it a bumpy ride with a convoluted plot, saved only by some comic sequences.
