Ek Mini Katha

Ek Mini Katha (transl. “A ‘Mini’ Story”) is a 2021 Telugu adult comedy directed by debutant Karthik Rapolu and written by Merlapaka Gandhi, starring Santosh Sobhan, Kavya Thapar and Shraddha Das. Produced by UV Concepts, a subsidiary of UV Creations, it skipped theatres during the pandemic and premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 27 May 2021. Our record lists a running time of 134 minutes.

What the story is about

Santosh is a young civil engineer who has been convinced since childhood, thanks to a handful of awkward incidents, that his penis is too small. He quietly tries every remedy recommended by an online support group, none of which work, while his father, a university professor, misreads his behaviour and concludes that his son is a sex addict. When his father arranges a match with Amrutha and the two genuinely fall for each other, Santosh’s private anxiety becomes a problem he can no longer avoid, and the comedy comes from his increasingly desperate attempts to fix it before the wedding night. The film frames the story as Santosh telling his past to a psychiatrist.

Making and release

The film was shot in early 2021, with portions filmed on Hyderabad’s Durgam Cheruvu bridge and the Hyderabad Metro. It was planned for cinemas, with a theatrical date of 30 April 2021, but the COVID-19 lockdown postponed it indefinitely, and Prime Video bought the streaming rights; Wikipedia, citing The Times of India‘s OTT announcement, puts the deal at ₹9 crore. The songs were released on the Mango Music label, starting with “Ee Maya Lo” on 18 March 2021 and “Saamiranga” on 21 April.

What critics said

Critics liked the premise more than the execution. Manoj Kumar R of The Indian Express called it “a half-baked comedy on matters of size”, and Ramya Palisetty of India Today wrote that it begins by offering something new but fails to deliver by the end. Baradwaj Rangan of Film Companion called it a barely funny comedy that needed much sharper writing. Sangeetha Devi Dundoo of The Hindu was mixed, with praise reserved for the lead actor’s performance.
