Posani Krishna Murali (born 22 January 1958) is an Indian screenwriter, actor, director and producer who works mainly in Telugu cinema. He has written more than 150 Telugu films, directed several, including the successful political satire Operation Duryodhana (2007), and become a familiar character actor. In 2009 he unsuccessfully contested the Andhra Pradesh Assembly election from Chilakaluripet.
Early life and education
Posani was born in Pedakakani, Guntur district, to Posani Subba Rao, who held a small job there, and grew up in a family that struggled financially; his father wanted him to study well. He earned a B.Com and an MA from Acharya Nagarjuna University, where he was general secretary of the student body, and later an MPhil from Presidency College in Chennai. He is a cousin of the director Boyapati Srinu. After working at chit fund companies in Hyderabad, he went to Chennai and asked the writer Paruchuri Gopala Krishna for work.
Apprenticeship
He spent five years as an assistant to the Paruchuri Brothers, working on more than 100 films, even turning down an early offer from Ram Gopal Varma because he felt he still had much to learn.
Writer
Striking out in 1992, he wrote Police Brothers, then dialogue for Varma’s Gaayam (1993), and on Varma’s recommendation wrote for Nagarjuna’s Rakshana. His breakthrough came with the story, screenplay and dialogue for Chiranjeevi’s Alluda Majaka, followed by successes such as Preminchukundam Raa, Pellichesukundam, Gokulamlo Seetha and Master. He wrote eight films in 1999 and nine in 2000.
Actor
Posani began acting in 2001 in Srihari‘s Evadra Rowdy, which he also wrote, and followed it with Venkatesh‘s Gemini and Mahesh Babu‘s Bobby (2002), where his performance was praised despite the film’s failure. After his villainous role in Naayak (2013), he was offered many supporting parts, including in Attarintiki Daredi.
Director
After some 150 films as a writer, he set up UP Cinema Lines and wrote, directed and produced Sravanamasam (2005), a multi-star film that failed and cost him heavily. He recovered with Operation Duryodhana, starring Srikanth, which the source says earned nearly ten times its budget and was praised by critics. He went on to direct films such as Mental Krishna and Posani Gentleman, some with himself in the lead.
