Operation Valentine is a 2024 Indian action drama based on the 2019 Pulwama attack and the Indian Air Force’s retaliatory Balakot air strikes. Shakti Pratap Singh Hada directed it, his debut as a director, and it was produced by Sony Pictures Films India and Sandeep Mudda. Shot in both Telugu and Hindi, it stars Varun Tej, Manushi Chhillar and Mir Sarwar, with Navdeep in a cameo. It was released on 1 March 2024 to mixed reviews.

Premise

The film draws on the Pulwama attack of 2019 and the air strikes on Balakot that followed. It tells its story through the Indian Air Force, mixing aerial action with patriotism and drama.

Cast and firsts

Varun Tej plays the lead, and the film marked his Hindi debut. His co-star Manushi Chhillar made her Telugu debut. Mir Sarwar also appears, and Navdeep has a cameo. God Bless Entertainment and Nandkumar Abbineni co-produced the film.

Production

The makers revealed the title Operation Valentine after finishing the third schedule on 14 August 2023. They announced that filming had wrapped on 19 October 2023.

Music

Mickey J. Meyer composed the songs and background score, and Saregama acquired the audio rights. The first single, “Vande Mataram”, was launched at the Wagah Border.

Release

The film was first scheduled for 8 December 2023 and then 16 February 2024, but post-production delays pushed it back. It reached theatres worldwide on 1 March 2024. Amazon Prime Video bought the streaming rights and began streaming it on 22 March 2024.

Reception

Critics were divided. Rediff.com and The Times of India each gave it 3 out of 5. They described it as a formula air force film that works as a sincere tribute to the Indian Air Force and is a decent watch. The Hindu found the writing short on new ideas and the lead couple’s relationship underwritten. The Indian Express gave it 1.5 out of 5, citing a missing human story and patchy graphics while praising Varun Tej. The New Indian Express was critical of the writing but noted Chhillar’s understated intensity.
