He was born on 17 April in Madras (now Chennai). Wikipedia gives the year as 1979; Wikidata gives 1980. He studied commerce at Kirori Mal College, Delhi, and worked as an assistant director to Mani Ratnam on Kannathil Muthamittal before acting.

He entered Telugu cinema with Prabhu Deva’s first film as a director, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (2005), playing the NRI Santhosh opposite Trisha. It won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu (Idlebrain). After the Hindi Rang De Basanti (2006), he starred in Bhaskar’s family drama Bommarillu opposite Genelia. Wikipedia says it was a domestic blockbuster and the highest-grossing Telugu film overseas at the time, and it brought him a second Filmfare nomination.
His later Telugu films include Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam and Oy! (2009), the Disney co-produced fantasy Anaganaga O Dheerudu (2011), in which he played a blind warrior, and Oh My Friend (2011). He played a wedding planner opposite Samantha in Nandini Reddy’s Jabardasth (2013), which drew poor reviews, and appeared in Something Something and Baadshah (2013).
He then concentrated on Tamil films, with Jigarthanda and Kaaviya Thalaivan (2014), and co-wrote and produced the thriller Aval. He returned to Telugu in Mahasamudram (2021), which underperformed. His Tamil film Chithha (2023), which he produced, won him the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor – Tamil. Later work includes Indian 2 (2024), Test (2025) and the streaming series Operation Safed Sagar (2026).
