Race is a 2013 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy heist thriller directed by Ramesh Raparthi and produced by Anne Ravi. It stars Vikram Veer, known for Manasara, with newcomers Bharat Kishore and Karthik, and Disha Pandey and Nikitha Narayan. The film was mostly shot in Thailand and was released to negative reviews.

Cast

  • Vikram Veer as Abhiram
  • Bharat Kishore as Sidharth
  • Karthik as Chaitanya
  • Disha Pandey as Aarthi
  • Nikitha Narayan as Anjali
  • Srinivasa Reddy, Gundu Sudarshan and Fish Venkat in supporting roles

Development

Vikram pitched the idea of three friends travelling to Bangkok to his childhood friend Ramesh Raparthi, who went on to direct it. Pre-production took ten months. The debutants Bharat Kishore and Karthik play full-length roles alongside Vikram. According to the makers, the title reflects a race for “money, honey and stability”. They said the film differs from The Hangover and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara because it is a thriller.

Music

Vivek Sagar and Sanjay composed the music, with lyrics by Sri Mani. Venkatesh and Gopichand attended the audio launch.

Reception

Most critics were unimpressed. The Times of India gave it two out of five. It said the cast fit their parts but the film dragged and tested the audience’s patience. Idlebrain noted its style, but found the emotions and narration weak and the direction amateurish. Fullhyd.com advised against spending two and a half hours on it.

A dissenting view

IndiaGlitz was the exception. It called the film surprisingly worth watching for its dialogue, neat performances and smart execution, provided viewers kept their expectations ordinary.
