Satya 2

Satya 2 (meaning “Truth 2”) is a 2013 crime film directed by Ram Gopal Varma, shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu. It stars Sharwanand in the Telugu version and Puneet Singh Ratn in the Hindi, with Anaika Soti and Mahesh Thakur. The fourth film in Varma’s gangster series, it is unrelated to the original trilogy. The Telugu version drew negative reviews.

Story

With Mumbai’s underworld in decline after a decade of police action, Satya, a newcomer to the city, takes a job with a construction tycoon. Trying to outdo a business rival, he becomes entangled with the mafia and its remnants, clashes with a retired gang leader and his son, and sets out to build a new kind of criminal empire.

Production and music

Varma said that after two decades of studying gangsters for his films, such as Satya and Company, he wondered what would happen if someone studied them in order to become a gangster, and that idea became Satya 2. A romantic song was shot in Kashmir in June 2013, and the film was made on a budget of ₹15 crore according to the source. Shakthikanth Karthick composed the background score, and several composers contributed to the nine-song soundtrack.

Release

The film passed the censor board with an A certificate and three cuts, and was released in the UAE in late October 2013 and in India on 8 November 2013. Varma hinted it would be his last underworld film. It opened to low occupancy.

Reception

The Hindi version drew mixed reviews, with Subhash K. Jha calling it a return to form for Varma and Taran Adarsh finding the right elements of a gangster film, while The Times of India gave it two stars. Reviewing the Telugu version, The Hindu advised viewers to skip it and watch the original Satya.
