Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi (meaning “How to mess up in love”) is a 2012 Tamil-language romantic comedy written and directed by Balaji Mohan in his feature debut, based on his own short film. It follows college mates Arun, played by Siddharth, and Parvathy, played by Amala Paul. It was partly reshot in Telugu as Love Failure, and both versions were released on 17 February 2012 to critical and commercial success.

Story

Arun and Parvathy sit down for an interview about their love story and start arguing before it is over. The film then goes back five months to their meeting in a college canteen, their friendship and romance, and the pressures in Parvathy’s home, where her parents are heading for divorce. Through their ever more frequent fights, it looks at how small things can slowly pull a relationship apart.

Cast

  • Siddharth as Arun
  • Amala Paul as Parvathy
  • Balaji Mohan’s assistant directors Arjunan and Vignesh as Arun’s friends
  • Bobby Simha, credited as Jayasimha, in his first major film appearance

Production

Siddharth saw Balaji Mohan’s ten-minute short film and wanted to turn it into a feature; he joined the project as lead and co-producer, with cinematographer Nirav Shah, through their new banner Etaki Entertainment, alongside S. Sashikanth’s YNOT Studios. Amala Paul joined in August 2011. The film was shot in Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore in a record 35 working days, in both languages. Thaman S. composed the music, with Telugu lyrics by Sri Mani, and T. S. Suresh edited the film.

Release and reception

Released during Valentine’s Day week with a comic-book-style campaign, the film was praised as fresh and funny. Sify called it jolly good fun, The Times of India called it an impressive debut, and The Hindu described it as a festival. The Telugu Love Failure was equally well received, with reviewers at The Times of India, Rediff and Idlebrain praising its humour and contemporary take on love. Amala Paul was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil.

Legacy

Along with Pizza, the film set off a short-lived boom of short-film directors making feature debuts in Tamil cinema, and its success helped start a brief run of successful comedies.
