Gaami (transl. Seeker) is a 2024 Indian Telugu-language epic adventure thriller written and directed by newcomer Vidyadhar Kagita. It stars Vishwak Sen, Chandini Chowdary, Abhinaya, Harika Pedada and Mohammad Samad. The film started with a crowdfunding campaign and was produced by Karthik Sabareesh under Karthik Kult. Released on 8 March 2024 to positive reviews, it was a major success, grossing over ₹22 crore on a budget of ₹6 crore according to the source. It was the first Telugu film screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Story

Shankar, an Aghora with amnesia and a condition that makes him unable to bear human touch, is cast out of his ashram by others who believe he is cursed. He learns of Maalipatram, a glowing mushroom hidden in the Himalayas that can cure him if it is eaten in a 15-day window that comes once every 36 years. With Jahnavi, a doctor researching the mushroom, he sets out on a perilous journey, while separate stories unfold elsewhere.

Development

Kagita began writing in May 2016 and finalised the shooting script by April 2018, after scouting locations such as Zanskar, Leh and Khardung La in the Himalayan winters. In July 2018 he launched a crowdfunding campaign on Facebook, which drew strong support from the public and the industry. Vishwak Sen and Chandini Chowdary were approached on the strength of their earlier work.

Filming

Principal photography began in September 2018 in villages around Nellore. It took about 130 days, using a small crew and guerrilla techniques, with locations including the ghats of Allahabad and Varanasi, Leh and Khardung La. Twelve sets were built at a warehouse studio. Despite interruptions from the 2019 India–Pakistan border skirmishes and the COVID-19 pandemic, filming wrapped on 6 November 2020. Post-production included nearly 700 visual effects shots.

Music and release

Naresh Kumaran composed the score, and the songs are by Naresh Kumaran and Sweekar Agasthi. The film was released worldwide on 8 March 2024 and began streaming on ZEE5 on 12 April 2024.

Reception and box office

The Hindu called it an immersive, soul-searching journey, and critics praised the direction, Vishwak Sen’s performance, the cinematography and the score. According to the source, it gave Vishwak Sen his biggest opening day, ₹9.07 crore, despite clashing with Bhimaa. It also became his highest grosser in international markets, with US$500,000.
