Nuvve Kavali (transl. “I want only you”) is a 2000 Telugu romantic comedy directed by K. Vijaya Bhaskar and produced by Ramoji Rao under Ushakiran Movies. An official adaptation of the 1999 Malayalam film Niram, it introduced Tarun, Richa Pallod and Sai Kiran in lead roles, with Varsha. Released on 13 October 2000, it was praised for Trivikram Srinivas‘s dialogue and Koti’s music, became a huge sleeper hit, and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. Our record lists a running time of 146 minutes.

What the story is about

Tarun and Madhu were born on the same day in the same hospital, to parents who have been best friends since college and now live next door to each other. The two grow up inseparable and end up in the same college class, where everyone sees them as just friends, except Varsha, a clumsy, sweet classmate with a huge crush on Tarun, who suspects he has feelings for Madhu. He laughs it off. But when Madhu goes away to Bangalore for a week of college competitions with Prakash, a talented singer who has taken a liking to her, Tarun misses her more than he can explain, and his teasing maid Rukku has a theory about why. The film is about the moment a lifelong friendship turns into something more, and what two people do when they realise it a little too late.

Making of the film

Producer Sravanthi Ravi Kishore held the remake rights to Niram but, after losses on earlier films, could not make it alone, so he took the subject to Ramoji Rao, who agreed to co-produce. Tarun and Richa Pallod had worked together on a Fanta commercial before debuting as leads here. Director Vijaya Bhaskar and writer Trivikram were reuniting after Swayamvaram (1999); Trivikram told Idlebrain he wanted to write the dialogue afresh rather than translate Niram, keeping only the key line “Nuvvendukuraa naaku mundu I love you cheppaledu” (“Why didn’t you say I love you to me before?”) and adding humour and characters such as Sunil’s. The whole film was shot at Ramoji Film City.

Koti composed the soundtrack, adapting two songs from Vidyasagar’s Malayalam originals; “Kallalloki Kallu Petti” was based on “Maataraani Mounamidi” from Maharshi (1987) at Ravi Kishore’s request. Lyrics were by Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry and Bhuvana Chandra.

Reviews

A Rediff.com critic noted that Richa and Tarun, despite being newcomers, were “very comfortable in front of the camera”, comparable to Boban and Shalini in the original. Jeevi of Idlebrain.com gave it 4.5 out of 5 and wrote: “There is never a dull moment in this film”. Andhra Today praised Vijaya Bhaskar for relying on the story and getting the best from the cast and crew, calling the first half very enjoyable and predicting a great hit if audiences took the second half’s love conflict in the right spirit.

Box office and awards

According to The Times of India, the film was budgeted at ₹75 lakh but ended up costing about ₹1.2 crore as the makers spent more on production values. Wikipedia, citing The Times of India and producer Ravi Kishore’s interview with Telugucinema.com, says it went on to earn a distributors’ share of over ₹20 crore and was the highest-grossing Telugu film of its time. Idlebrain‘s analysis records a run of 100 days in 30 centres, 200 days in 20, 250 days in 10 and 365 days in 6.

At the 48th National Film Awards it won Best Feature Film in Telugu, cited “for a refreshing film about a teenage friendship that blossoms into romance”. It also won four Filmfare Awards South: Best Film – Telugu, Best Director for K. Vijaya Bhaskar, Best Actress for Richa Pallod and Best Male Playback Singer for Sriram Prabhu.
