Major Chandrakanth is a 1993 Telugu action drama directed by K. Raghavendra Rao and written by the Paruchuri Brothers, starring N. T. Rama Rao in the title role with Mohan Babu, Nagma, Ramya Krishna, Sarada and Amrish Puri. Mohan Babu produced it under Sree Lakshmi Prasanna Pictures and M. M. Keeravani composed the music. Released on 23 April 1993, it was N. T. Rama Rao’s final acting performance: Srinatha Kavi Sarvabhoumudu reached cinemas later, but Major Chandrakanth was completed after it.
What the story is about
Major Chandrakanth is a patriotic army officer awarded the Param Vir Chakra for rescuing foreign delegates from a terrorist known as GK. His close friend Major Rajasekhar is fatally wounded in the mission and, before dying, asks Chandrakanth to make sure his daughter Sita marries Chandrakanth’s son Sivaji. But while Chandrakanth was away at the border, Sivaji drifted into crime, working with a woman named Hema and, without knowing it, for the corrupt MP Gnaneswara Rao, whose five sons terrorise society. When Chandrakanth comes home and begins taking on Gnaneswara Rao, father and son are set on a collision course.

Making of the film
N. T. Rama Rao had told the press he wanted to make a film to raise funds for the Basavatarakam Medical Trust building; Mohan Babu responded by proposing Major Chandrakanth. It was the 12th production of Sree Lakshmi Prasanna Pictures and the 12th collaboration between Rama Rao and K. Raghavendra Rao, and it marked Rama Rao’s return to social drama after nearly a decade. Mohan Babu, often his screen antagonist in earlier films, played the second lead, and his son Manchu Manoj appeared as a child actor and was credited as presenter. Nagma’s and Ramya Krishna’s voices were dubbed by Roja Ramani.
The film was launched on 20 November 1992 at Ramakrishna Cine Studios in Nacharam, Hyderabad, with Chandrababu Naidu switching on the camera. It was shot in Rajahmundry, Araku Valley, Delhi, Kulu Manali and Kashmir, with scenes among army personnel in Chandigarh.
Music and reception
Keeravani’s songs, with lyrics by Jaladi, Keeravani, Rasaraju and Gurucharan, were a large part of its success. “Punyabhumi Na Desam”, written by Jaladi, in which Rama Rao portrays figures such as Chhatrapati Shivaji, Alluri Sitaramaraju and Subhash Chandra Bose, is still played on national holidays; “Muddulatho Onamaalu”, “Uliki Padaku Allari Moguda” and “Neekkavalsindi” were also popular.
Sita of Sivaranjani magazine praised Rama Rao’s performance, the story and the technical work, while Alluru Rahim of Zamin Ryot was more mixed on the story and screenplay but admired Rama Rao’s zeal. Wikipedia describes the film as a major box-office success that celebrated 100 days in several centres, with a centenary function in Tirupati; it gives no collection figures.
