Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1 is a 2025 Telugu-language historical action-adventure film written and directed by A. M. Jyothi Krishna together with Krish Jagarlamudi. Set in the 17th-century Mughal Empire, it stars Pawan Kalyan in the title role, with Nidhhi Agerwal and Bobby Deol. After nearly five years in production, it was released on 24 July 2025 to negative reviews and was a box office disaster.

Story

In 17th-century Mughal India, Veera Mallu is a celebrated warrior-outlaw who robs the rich to help the poor. Crossing paths first as a rival and then as an ally of a gang leader, he is drawn into a plot to steal a priceless hoard of diamonds, and is then given a mission to recover the Koh-i-Noor to save a city from Mughal soldiers, pitting him against the ruthless prince Aurangzeb.

Cast

  • Pawan Kalyan as Hari Hara Veera Mallu
  • Nidhhi Agerwal as Panchami
  • Bobby Deol as Aurangzeb
  • Nargis Fakhri as Roshanara, Aurangzeb’s sister
  • Sathyaraj, Easwari Rao, Sunil, Nassar, Subbaraju and Raghu Babu in supporting roles

Development

Producer A. M. Rathnam approached Pawan Kalyan, then semi-retired from films for politics, in September 2019, and Krish narrated a period story in which he would play a thief. The film was launched in January 2020 as PSPK 27 and titled Hari Hara Veera Mallu in March 2021. Arjun Rampal was originally cast as Aurangzeb but was replaced by Bobby Deol, and Nargis Fakhri replaced Jacqueline Fernandez. In May 2024 the film was split into two parts, and because of repeated delays Rathnam’s son, A. M. Jyothi Krishna, took over the remaining direction under Krish’s supervision.

Filming

Shooting began in September 2020 and was repeatedly interrupted by the pandemic, Pawan Kalyan’s other film commitments and his 2024 election campaign. Sets recreating Charminar, the Red Fort and Machilipatnam port were built, and later schedules took place at Ramoji Film City and in Vijayawada. Filming ended in May 2025, almost five years after it began. M. M. Keeravani composed the music, Sai Madhav Burra wrote the dialogue and Ben Lock supervised the visual effects. Pawan Kalyan returned ₹11 crore of his fee to help finish the film.

Release and reception

After repeated postponements from an original January 2022 date, the film was released on 24 July 2025 in standard and EPIQ formats, along with dubbed versions. Critics praised the action and performances but widely criticised the visual effects and uneven tone, and it failed at the box office.

What critics said

Reviews cited in the article were mostly negative about the visual effects and the writing, while crediting the action, Pawan Kalyan and M. M. Keeravani's music.

  • India TV (Jaya Dwivedie) named Pawan Kalyan's performance the film's strongest aspect and the music its soul, but found Bobby Deol's Aurangzeb a stereotypical villain.
  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) praised the action and music, but said a second part would need far sharper writing.
  • Hindustan Times (Neeshita Nyayapati) felt the visual effects and writing were a massive letdown.
  • The Times of India (Paul Nicodemus) criticised the effects and storytelling but praised the score, production design and costumes.
  • India Today (T Maruthi Acharya) felt the execution does not match its ambition.
  • The Indian Express (Swarup Kodur) called it “a misguided revisionist project”.
  • The Hollywood Reporter India (Sruthi Ganapathy Raman) felt it moves into deeply problematic territory.
