Tharun Bhascker (Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam, born 5 November 1988) is an Indian film director, actor and screenwriter in Telugu cinema. His romantic comedy Pelli Choopulu (2016) won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu, and he won the award for Best Screenplay – Dialogues. He went on to direct Ee Nagaraniki Emaindhi (2018) and Keedaa Cola (2023), and to act in leading roles.
Early life
Tharun Bhascker was born in Madras and raised in Hyderabad. He studied at The Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, and the Swami Vivekananda Institute of Technology, and later graduated from the New York Film Academy. His mother, Geetha Bhascker, is an actress and educational entrepreneur who made her screen debut in Fidaa (2017).
Short films
He began by directing short films such as Anukokunda and Sainma. Anukokunda was screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
Pelli Choopulu
Pelli Choopulu (2016) was his first feature as director. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu, and he won for Best Screenplay – Dialogues. The film was remade in Hindi as Mitron (2018), in Malayalam as Vijay Superum Pournamiyum (2019) and in Tamil as Oh Manapenne.
Later work
He made his acting debut in 2018 as Singeetam Srinivasa Rao in the biopic Mahanati. That year he also directed the buddy comedy Ee Nagaraniki Emaindhi and wrote the screenplay for the ZEE5 web series B. Tech.
Lead roles and Keedaa Cola
He played the lead in Meeku Maathrame Cheptha (2019). His next film as director, Keedaa Cola, was released on 3 November 2023.
