Pelli Choopulu (transl. Matchmaking) is a 2016 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy written and directed by Tharun Bhascker and produced by Raj Kandukuri and Yash Rangineni. It stars Vijay Deverakonda and Ritu Varma. Released on 29 July 2016 to positive reviews, it became a blockbuster and a breakthrough for its cast and crew. It won two National Film Awards, and Film Companion ranked it among the 25 greatest Telugu films of the decade.
Story
Prasanth, a lazy young man who took five years to clear his B.Tech and dreams of becoming a chef, goes to Chitra’s house for a matchmaking meeting. Chitra is focused and determined to go to Australia, though her father is indifferent to her ambitions. When the two are accidentally locked in a room, they pass the time talking about their pasts. Their shared aspirations draw them together, and the story is loosely based on the real-life “Spitfire BBQ” food truck.
Development and casting
After many short films, Tharun Bhascker made his feature debut here. He described it as an urban, middle-class Hyderabad comedy contrasting two generations. In his framing, being stuck in the room stands for dating, and the food truck for living together. He drew on the character arcs of Knocked Up and on films such as Chef. Ritu Varma had worked in his short Anukokunda. Vijay Deverakonda, who had a supporting role in Yevade Subramanyam, got his first lead role.
Filming and music
The film was shot entirely in sync sound, using the same equipment as Gangs of Wasseypur, and was completed in 35 days. Vivek Sagar composed six songs, written after the film was shot, with lyricists including Rahul Ramakrishna.
Box office
According to the source, the film cost ₹60 lakh to ₹1.2 crore, with another ₹60 lakh spent on promotion. D. Suresh Babu bought the theatrical rights for ₹1.50 crore. It grossed over ₹30 crore in five weeks, and in the US it grossed over $1.22 million on rights bought for $200,000.
Awards and remakes
It won the National Film Awards for Best Telugu Film and Best Screenplay, Nandi Awards for Best Feature Film and Best Actress, and two Filmfare Awards South including Best Telugu Film. It was remade in Hindi as Mitron (2018), in Malayalam as Vijay Superum Pournamiyum (2019) and in Tamil as Oh Manapenne! (2021).
