Virata Parvam (transl. The Chapter of Virata) is a 2022 Indian Telugu-language period romantic action drama written and directed by Venu Udugula and produced by Suresh Productions and SLV Cinemas. It stars Sai Pallavi and Rana Daggubati, with Priyamani, Nandita Das, Naveen Chandra, Zarina Wahab, Easwari Rao and Sai Chand in supporting roles. Released on 17 June 2022, it was well reviewed but, according to the source, underperformed at the box office.

Story

Set in 1990s Telangana during the Naxalite movement, the film follows Vennela, born in Warangal district in 1973. Raised on her father’s poetry, she becomes devoted to the writings of Ravi Shankar, a Naxal leader known as Comrade Ravanna who writes under the pen name Aranya. She falls in love with him through his words and sets out to find him.

Cast

  • Sai Pallavi as Vennela
  • Rana Daggubati as Ravi Shankar, a Naxal leader
  • Priyamani, Nandita Das, Naveen Chandra, Zarina Wahab, Easwari Rao and Sai Chand in supporting roles

Development

In June 2018, Venu Udugula said his second film would be a 1990s period love story that also dealt with politics and action. Sai Pallavi and Rana Daggubati signed on in November 2018, and the film was launched in Hyderabad in June 2019. Udugula drew on events he witnessed as a child in Warangal. Vennela was based in part on Thumu Sarala, a young woman from Warangal district who joined the Naxalites in 1992, though the plot and characters are fictional. After the release, the lead actors and the director met Sarala’s family. The title refers to the fourth book of the Mahabharata.

Filming and music

Principal photography ran from July 2019 to December 2020, with locations in Vikarabad, Warangal and Hyderabad and in Kerala. Suresh Bobbili composed the music, and Dani Sanchez-Lopez was the cinematographer.

Release

The film was first scheduled for 30 April 2021 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 situation. It finally opened in theatres on 17 June 2022 to positive reviews, though it did not do well commercially.
