Bharathiraja introduced her to films, but Evare Atagaadu was released before his Kangalal Kaidhu Sei. She went on to work in Malayalam and Tamil, including Balu Mahendra’s Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam (2005). Ameer’s Paruthiveeran (2007), a surprise blockbuster, won her the National Film Award for Best Actress, a Filmfare award and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award. The same year she had a commercial success in Telugu with S. S. Rajamouli’s Yamadonga.
She won another Filmfare award for the Malayalam film Thirakkatha (2008), and her Kannada debut Raam (2009) was a hit. Her 2009 Telugu films (Drona, Mitrudu and Pravarakhyudu) did not do well. In 2010 she starred in Shambo Shiva Shambo and Puri Jagannadh’s Golimaar, and Ram Gopal Varma cast her in his bilingual Rakta Charitra after seeing her work in Paruthiveeran. She also appeared in Mani Ratnam’s Raavanan. Her later Telugu films include Chandee (2013) and Sirivennela (2016).
In recent years she has worked on streaming, notably in the Hindi series The Family Man, which won her a Filmfare OTT Critics award. In Telugu she has starred in Narappa (2021) with Venkatesh, Bhamakalapam (2022) and its sequel (2024), both released on Aha, Virata Parvam (2022) and S Saraswathi (2026).
