F3: Fun and Frustration is a 2022 Indian Telugu-language comedy written and directed by Anil Ravipudi and produced by Dil Raju and Sirish under Sri Venkateswara Creations. It is a standalone sequel to F2: Fun and Frustration (2019), with Venkatesh, Varun Tej, Tamannaah Bhatia and Mehreen Pirzada returning. It was released on 27 May 2022 to mixed reviews and was a commercial success.
Story
Venky works as an agent at an RTO office in Hyderabad, struggles to make ends meet and hides the fact that he suffers from night blindness. His friend Varun, an orphan with a stutter, keeps coming up with schemes to get rich, none of which work. After a bad investment in Harika’s family restaurant, the two borrow heavily from a local landlord in a chase for easy money, and the comedy grows out of their mounting frustrations with money.
Development and cast
Dil Raju announced a sequel in February 2019, after the success of F2. Ravipudi later explained that F3 is not a direct continuation but a new story in which the leads are frustrated by money. Venkatesh plays a man with night blindness, and Varun Tej’s character has a stutter. Sunil and Murali Sharma joined in key roles, Sonal Chauhan appears in what she called a surprise role, and Pooja Hegde features in a special song.
Filming
The film was launched on 6 December 2020, and shooting began in Hyderabad on 26 December 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic halted work from April to June 2021, and shooting resumed in September. Scenes were filmed at Charminar in December 2021, and the talkie portions wrapped in January 2022. Pooja Hegde’s song was shot in April 2022 on a set built at Annapurna Studios.
Music
Devi Sri Prasad, who also scored F2, composed the songs and background score, and Aditya Music acquired the audio rights. The singles included “Lab Dab Dabboo”, “Woo Aaa Aha Aha” and “Life Ante Itta Vundaala”, the last featuring Pooja Hegde.
Release
A planned August 2021 release was dropped because of the pandemic. Later dates were moved to avoid clashing with Bheemla Nayak and Acharya. The film finally came out on 27 May 2022. It began streaming on Sony LIV and Netflix on 22 July 2022, and Zee Telugu holds the satellite rights.
Reception and box office
Critics were split. Cinema Express called it a laugh riot and an improvement on the first film, and The Hindu found it uneven but funny, with Venkatesh standing out. The Times of India and Deccan Herald found it loud and only partly successful, while Firstpost and The Indian Express were strongly negative. According to the source, the film grossed ₹23 crore worldwide on its opening day and about ₹134 crore by the end of its run. The same article elsewhere gives a lower worldwide figure, so the exact total is uncertain.
