Kousalya Krishnamurthy is a 2019 Indian Telugu-language sports drama directed by Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao and produced by K. A. Vallabha under Creative Commercials. It stars Aishwarya Rajesh, in her Telugu debut, Rajendra Prasad and Karthik Raju, with Sivakarthikeyan in a supporting role. A remake of the 2018 Tamil film Kanaa, it was released on 23 August 2019.

Story

Kousalya, a farmer’s daughter in a village, grows up sharing her father Krishnamurthy’s love of cricket. After seeing him cry over India’s defeat in the 2007 World Cup, she resolves to become an international cricketer to bring back his smile. At 11 she joins the village boys’ team as an off-spinner. Her father supports her even as many villagers disapprove of a girl playing with boys.

Production

The film’s presenter, K. S. Rama Rao, saw the trailer of Kanaa on the set of World Famous Lover and decided to remake it in Telugu. It was shot around Rajahmundry. The remake reuses the original’s scenes featuring Sivakarthikeyan and the cricket team.

Music

Dhibu Ninan Thomas, composer of the original, scored the film, reusing all of the tunes from Kanaa.

Release

The film was released in theatres on 23 August 2019.

Reception

Reviews were lukewarm. The Times of India and Deccan Chronicle each gave it 2.5 out of 5. The first said it had more cricket than story, and the second that its clichéd presentation undercut a thought-provoking subject.
