Manamantha (transl. All of Us) is a 2016 Indian Telugu-language anthology film written and directed by Chandra Sekhar Yeleti and produced by Sai Korrapati. It stars Mohanlal, Gautami, Viswant Duddumpudi and Raina Rao. It was Mohanlal’s first full Telugu film, after a guest appearance in Gandeevam (1994). Released worldwide on 5 August 2016, it was partly reshot in Malayalam as Vismayam. Film Companion lists it among the 25 greatest Telugu films of the decade.

Story

The film follows four people with different paths and ambitions. Sai Ram is an assistant manager at a Hyderabad supermarket, and Mahitha is a young schoolgirl. Abhiram is a computer engineering graduate who falls in love, and Gayathri is a housewife. Their four stories come together at the end.

Development

Yeleti announced the project on 14 October 2015 as a family entertainer made up of four stories. It was planned as a Telugu–Malayalam bilingual, but was shot in Telugu with only a few scenes reshot for Malayalam. A Tamil dubbed version, Namadhu, had lyrics and dialogue by Madhan Karky. Mohanlal and Gautami were reunited 19 years after Iruvar.

Casting

Mohanlal plays the principled, middle-class supermarket assistant manager. He learned Telugu with a translator to perfect his diction and dubbed his own voice in every language. Viswant Duddumpudi won a major role after a screen test, and Anisha Ambrose was cast as his love interest.

Filming and music

The film was launched in Hyderabad on 29 November 2015, and shooting began the next day in Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Mohanlal finished his portions by the third week of January. Mahesh Shankar composed the five songs, released by Vel Records on 27 July 2016. Rahul Shrivatsav was the cinematographer and G. V. Chandra Sekhar the editor.

Release

The film premiered in North America on 4 August 2016 and opened worldwide the next day, including in 81 theatres in the United States. The Tamil version was released at the same time, and the Malayalam version followed in October 2016.
