Premam (meaning “Love”) is a 2016 Telugu-language coming-of-age romantic drama co-written and directed by Chandoo Mondeti and produced by Suryadevara Naga Vamsi. A remake of the 2015 Malayalam hit of the same name, it stars Naga Chaitanya and Shruti Haasan, with Madonna Sebastian and Anupama Parameswaran reprising their original roles and guest appearances by Venkatesh and Nagarjuna. Released on 7 October 2016, it was one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of the year.

Story

The film follows Vikram, known as Vicky, and his friends from their teenage years into adulthood through his experiences of love. In 2000, a shy Vikram falls for Suma, the girl every boy in the area admires, only to learn she loves someone else. Later, at college, he falls for a lecturer, and the story follows him on into adulthood.

Cast

  • Naga Chaitanya as Vikram, in the role played by Nivin Pauly in the original
  • Anupama Parameswaran as Suma
  • Shruti Haasan as a lecturer, in the role played by Sai Pallavi
  • Madonna Sebastian, reprising her role
  • Venkatesh and Nagarjuna in guest appearances

Production

Sithara Entertainments bought the remake rights after the Malayalam film’s success, and Naga Chaitanya was announced in June 2015. Anupama Parameswaran and Madonna Sebastian both made their Telugu debuts. Filming ran from September 2015 to June 2016, with the college portions shot at Andhra University in Vizag and two songs in Norway. Karthik Ghattamaneni was the cinematographer and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao the editor.

Music

The seven-song soundtrack reused four songs by Rajesh Murugesan from the original, including “Evare”, a remake of “Malare”, while Gopi Sundar composed three new songs and the score. The album topped radio charts, and The Times of India called it a breath of fresh air.

Release and reception

After several changes of date, the film opened on 7 October 2016, the Dasara weekend. Fans of the original were critical of the promotional material, but the film drew a generally positive response. The Indian Express felt it did not match the Malayalam version, while The New Indian Express and Idlebrain praised its charm, casting and realistic approach.
