Game Over is a 2019 Indian psychological horror thriller directed by Ashwin Saravanan and produced by YNOT Studios and Reliance Entertainment. It was shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu and dubbed into Hindi, with Anurag Kashyap presenting the Hindi version. Taapsee Pannu stars as a woman with post-traumatic stress who has to defend her home against a mysterious intruder. The film was released on 14 June 2019 to mostly positive reviews.
Story
Swapna is a talented young video game designer who lives alone. She is afraid of the dark and suffers from an “anniversary reaction”, a form of post-traumatic stress triggered as the date of a past trauma approaches. While a serial killer is at large, she must defend her home from a mysterious intruder.
Production
The film marked Taapsee Pannu’s return to Tamil cinema after four years. The first-look poster, released on 10 October 2018, showed her in a wheelchair with both legs in plaster. Shooting began the next day, and she trained intensively to play a wheelchair user. Filming wrapped on 14 December 2018. Ashwin Saravanan and Kaavya Ramkumar wrote the Tamil dialogue, and Venkat Kacharla wrote the Telugu dialogue.
Music
The score is by Ron Ethan Yohann, who had worked with Saravanan on Maya and Iravaakaalam. YNOT Music released the soundtrack album, a 67-minute album of 28 tracks, on 24 August 2019.
Release
The teaser came out on 15 May 2019. Dhanush, Rana Daggubati and Pannu released the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi trailers on 30 May. All three versions opened on 14 June 2019 and were later made available on Netflix.
Reception
Most reviews were positive. Scroll.in, Firstpost, NDTV and Film Companion praised its tight, inventive and genre-bending writing, Saravanan’s direction and Pannu’s performance. Hindustan Times liked the concept but felt the final act fell apart, and The Indian Express found it stretched and repetitive despite a few genuine scares. According to the source, the film grossed ₹15.91 crore worldwide.
