Gully Rowdy

Gully Rowdy is a 2021 Telugu romantic action comedy directed by G. Nageswara Reddy and produced by Kona Venkat and M. V. V. Satyanarayana under Kona Film Corporation and MVV Cinemas, starring Sundeep Kishan, Neha Shetty and Rajendra Prasad, with Bobby Simha as a police officer. Sai Karthik and Ram Miriyala composed the music. It released in theatres on 17 September 2021.

What the story is about

Vasu is the grandson of Meesala Simhachalam, a self-styled rowdy of Vizag who sees himself as a fighter for justice. After Simhachalam is publicly humiliated by a vicious gangster, Bairagi Naidu, he is persuaded that with no heir to his legacy, the bright, studious Vasu must be trained as a rowdy. Vasu hates the idea but goes along with it for his grandfather’s sake. Years later he falls for Sahitya, a software employee and daughter of Head Constable Venkatrao, whose family’s valuable land has been grabbed by Bairagi. Vasu decides to help them get it back, and the plan spirals into a police case led by the sharp CI Raghu Nayak. The director described it to the Deccan Chronicle as “a sitcom on rowdyism”: a hero obliged to carry on a legacy he does not want, and trying to manage his love life at the same time.

Making and music

The film reunited Nageswara Reddy and Sundeep Kishan after Tenali Ramakrishna BA. BL. It was launched with a puja and first shot in Vizag on 16 December 2020, shot for 63 days in its first schedule across Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad, and wrapped in June 2021. In an interview with the Deccan Chronicle, the director said that although there are action elements, the film “is narrated in a comical way”. All the lyrics are by Bhaskarabhatla, and Mango Music released the songs, including “Puttene Prema” (7 May 2021) and “Changure Item Songree”, sung by Mangli (22 July 2021).

Release

There were early reports of a direct OTT premiere, but Sundeep Kishan confirmed a theatrical release. Dates of 21 May and 3 September 2021 were dropped before it opened on 17 September 2021. Wikipedia carries no reviews or box-office figures for the film.
