Rakshasudu (transl. Demon) is a 2019 Indian Telugu-language psychological thriller directed by Ramesh Varma. It stars Bellamkonda Sreenivas and Anupama Parameswaran and is the official remake of the 2018 Tamil film Ratsasan. It was released on 2 August 2019 to positive reviews and was a commercial success. According to the source, it grossed over ₹35 crore worldwide.
Story
The body of a murdered schoolgirl is found wrapped in plastic. Arun Kumar, an aspiring filmmaker who has been researching psychopaths for a script, has given up on cinema under family pressure and joined the police as a sub-inspector. As more killings follow, his knowledge of serial killers becomes central to the hunt for the murderer.
Production
Because Ratsasan had been such a success, competition for the remake rights was stiff. They were won by Koneru Satyanarayana, chairman of KL University in Vijayawada. The remake was shot in the first half of 2019 and finished in June.
Music and release
Ghibran composed the score and songs, released by Aditya Music. Originally set for 18 July 2019, the film was moved to 2 August 2019.
Box office
According to the source, the film grossed ₹3.9 crore worldwide on its opening day, ₹13.6 crore over the opening weekend and ₹17.1 crore in its first week, and went on to become a commercial success.
Reception
Critics were positive. The Times of India and Firstpost gave it 3.5 out of 5, praising the tight screenplay and editing. Both called it one of Bellamkonda Sreenivas’s best performances. India Today called it a frame-by-frame remake that still kept viewers engrossed, and several reviewers singled out Ghibran’s haunting score and the sound design.
