Indraja (born Rajathi) is an Indian actress who works in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu films as well as television. S. V. Krishna Reddy’s Telugu hit Yamaleela made her a star, and she later played the female lead in a string of successful Malayalam films.
Early life
Indraja was born in Chennai, the eldest of three sisters in a family steeped in Carnatic music. A trained classical singer and dancer, she learned Kuchipudi from Madhavapeddi Murthy, and was preparing for a career in journalism before films intervened.
Early roles
She appeared as a child in the Rajinikanth film Uzhaippali. Her first adult film was Jantar Mantar, and she took the name of her character in it, Indraja, as her screen name.
Telugu and Tamil
Yamaleela made her an overnight star and ran for over a year. Her Tamil films Thadayam and Rajavin Parvaiyile did not make much impact, and she found greater success elsewhere.
Malayalam films
She was the female lead in several successful Malayalam films, including Ustaad with Mohanlal and F.I.R with Suresh Gopi (both 1999), Chronic Bachelor (2003) with Mammootty, Mayilattam (2004) with Jayaram and Ben Johnson (2005).
Return to films
After a break following her marriage to the actor and businessman Mohammed Absar, with whom she has a daughter, she returned with notable roles in Telugu films.
