Lion is a 2015 Indian Telugu-language action thriller produced by Rudrapati Ramana Rao under SLV Cinema and directed by newcomer Satyadev. It stars Nandamuri Balakrishna, Trisha Krishnan and Radhika Apte, with music by Mani Sharma. The story is loosely based on the Hollywood film Unknown. Released on 15 May 2015 on more than 900 screens worldwide, it was a commercial failure.

Story

A man wakes in a Mumbai hospital after 18 months in a coma. A couple claim he is their son, Godse, the CEO of a company, but he insists he is someone else named Bose, and doctors conclude he has lost his memory. He escapes to Hyderabad to find his real life, only to meet people whose claims about who he is contradict each other.

Music

Mani Sharma’s soundtrack was released by Lahari Music. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu launched the audio at Shilpakala Vedika in Hyderabad on 9 April 2015.

Release

According to the source, the Andhra Pradesh theatrical rights sold for ₹20.83 crore and the Karnataka rights for ₹2.5 crore, and Gemini TV bought the satellite rights for ₹6 crore. The censor board gave the film a U/A certificate because of violence in the second half. It was later dubbed into Hindi as Ek Tsunami Jwalamukhi.

Reception

Idlebrain gave it 3 out of 5, calling the interval episode interesting and the film a Balakrishna show, though it wanted a better screenplay. The Hindu was harsh, saying the film took many backward steps and that Balakrishna needed some soul-searching.

Box office

According to the source, the film opened with a ₹5.5 crore share in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It ended its run with a worldwide gross of ₹28.95 crore and a share of ₹16.8 crore, below the value of its theatrical rights, and it was declared a commercial failure.
