Endukante Premanta (styled Endukante… Premanta!, transl. Because It’s Love) is a 2012 Indian Telugu-language fantasy romantic comedy written and directed by A. Karunakaran and produced by Sravanthi Ravi Kishore. It stars Ram Pothineni and Tamannaah Bhatia, with music by G. V. Prakash Kumar and dialogue by Kona Venkat. It is based on the American film Just Like Heaven (2005). It was released on 8 June 2012 to mixed reviews.
Story
The film follows a love between two souls across two eras, with both Ram and Tamannaah playing dual roles set in 1980 and 2012. In 1980s Vizag, Krishna waits outside Srinidhi’s college bus stop every day for three years, hoping she will notice him, and she secretly returns his feelings. Their story connects to a new pair in Paris in 2012, including Sravanthi, the daughter of India’s ambassador to France.
Production
Paruchuri Prasad was originally set to produce but pulled out over budget concerns. Sravanthi Ravi Kishore and Ram then decided to make the film anyway, believing the script could work as a bilingual. Shooting began in late July 2011 and took 118 days, including 60 days in Geneva and France. Every scene was shot twice for a Tamil version, Yen Endral Kadhal Enben, which was never released. Ram learned gymnastics for a song, which delayed the shoot by two months. Kona Venkat made his acting debut as one of the villains, and Rishi played the main antagonist, DK.
Music
G. V. Prakash Kumar’s soundtrack was launched at Annapurna Studios on 29 April 2012 and was well received. Musicperk rated it 7.5 out of 10.
Release
The film was certified U without cuts. Its planned 11 May 2012 release was moved to avoid Gabbar Singh, and it opened on 8 June 2012.
Reception
Critics praised the lead pair but found the script weak. Rediff gave it 1.5 out of 5, and The Times of India gave it 2.5 and called it underwhelming. The Hindu said it felt like a montage of different films, while CNN-IBN commended the director’s bold experiment.
