Hi Nanna (meaning “Hi Father”) is a 2023 Telugu-language romantic drama written and directed by Shouryuv in his debut and produced by Vyra Entertainments. It stars Nani and Mrunal Thakur, with Kiara Khanna, Jayaram and Priyadarshi Pulikonda. Released on 7 December 2023 to highly positive reviews, it was a box office hit.
Story
Six-year-old Mahi lives in Mumbai with her devoted father, Viraj, a successful fashion photographer, and is being treated for cystic fibrosis. Whenever she asks about her mother, Viraj avoids the subject, until she runs away and is rescued by a stranger named Yashna. At Mahi’s urging, Viraj finally tells the story of how he met and married her mother, Varsha, while Mahi imagines Yashna in her place. The tale of lost memories, love and fate that unfolds holds more than one surprise.
Cast
- Nani and Mrunal Thakur in the lead roles
- Kiara Khanna
- Jayaram and Priyadarshi Pulikonda
- Angad Bedi, in his Telugu debut
Production
Vyra Entertainment announced its first production on 1 January 2023 under the working title Nani 30, and the title Hi Nanna was revealed on 13 July. It was Mrunal Thakur’s second Telugu film after Sita Ramam. Filming began in Hyderabad in February 2023 and continued in Mumbai, Ramoji Film City and Coonoor. Sanu Varghese was the cinematographer and Praveen Anthony the editor.
Music
Hesham Abdul Wahab composed the songs and score, his first film with the director and Nani. Singles including “Samayama” and “Gaaju Bomma” were released ahead of the ten-song album, and Wahab re-recorded the background score using artificial intelligence, possibly a first for an Indian film. The background piece “Silent Conversations”, based on the raga Reethigowla, also became popular.
Release and reception
Moved forward from 21 December to avoid clashing with Salaar and Dunki, the film was released on 7 December 2023 with dubbed versions in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi, and began streaming on Netflix in January 2024. Critics praised its direction, screenplay, performances and music; The Hindu called it a breather amid larger-than-life action films, and The Indian Express noted echoes of Nani’s Jersey.
