Vimanam (transl. Airplane) is a 2023 Indian Telugu-language drama written and directed by Siva Prasad Yanala and produced by Kiran Korrapati and Zee Studios. It stars Samuthirakani and child actor Master Dhruvan, and it marked Meera Jasmine‘s return to Telugu cinema. It was released on 9 June 2023.
Story
Veerayya runs a public toilet complex in a Hyderabad slum near Begumpet, and his life revolves around his young son Raju. Besides Raju, his only companions are three neighbours: Daniel, a kind-hearted auto driver; Koti, a witty cobbler; and Sumathi, a compassionate sex worker. When he learns that Raju is gravely ill, Veerayya sets out to fulfil the boy’s dream of flying in an aeroplane, working day and night to save money for tickets.
Production
The film was made entirely in Telugu, but a key scene featuring Samuthirakani was also shot in Tamil.
Music
Charan Arjun composed the music, and Aditya Music acquired the distribution rights.
Release
The film opened in theatres on 9 June 2023 and began streaming on ZEE5 on 30 June 2023.
Reception
Reviews were mixed. The Times of India gave it 3 out of 5. It praised a film about a father’s love for his son with universal appeal, solid performances and decent production values. ABP Live found it emotionally affecting but lacking a stronger narrative. The Indian Express and India Today gave it 2, calling it an old-fashioned tearjerker weighed down by melodrama. The Hindu said Samuthirakani and Dhruvan gave their best to a story that became increasingly contrived.
