Sarkaru Vaari Paata (transl. Government Song) is a 2022 Indian Telugu-language action comedy drama written and directed by Parasuram. It was produced by Mythri Movie Makers, 14 Reels Plus and G. Mahesh Babu Entertainment. It stars Mahesh Babu, Keerthy Suresh and Samuthirakani. Released on 12 May 2022 to mixed reviews, it grossed ₹180–230 crore worldwide according to the source, making it the second-highest-grossing Telugu film of 2022.
Story
Mahi runs a tough loan business in Miami and makes life miserable for defaulters. He falls for Kalaavathi and lends her money for her studies, only to find she is a gambling addict who conned him. When he demands repayment, she threatens him with the power of her father, Rajendranath, an influential MP and industrialist in Visakhapatnam.
Development and casting
Parasuram narrated the script to Mahesh Babu after the success of Geetha Govindam (2018), and returned to it when the pandemic delayed his other project. He called directing Babu a dream come true. The film was announced on 31 May 2020, the birthday of Babu’s father, Krishna. Keerthy Suresh was confirmed as the female lead in October 2020. Vennela Kishore and Subbaraju joined in January 2021, and Samuthirakani joined in September 2021.
Filming
After a launch in Hyderabad on 21 November 2020, shooting began in Dubai on 25 January 2021 with a four-week schedule at Mleiha in Sharjah. A COVID-19 outbreak among the crew halted work in April 2021. Filming resumed that July and moved to Goa and Spain, with much of it shot on large indoor sets designed by A. S. Prakash. The climax was filmed at an aluminium factory in Hyderabad, and shooting wrapped in late April 2022. R. Madhi was the cinematographer and Marthand K. Venkatesh the editor.
Music
Thaman S composed the music, his fourth film with Mahesh Babu, and Saregama acquired the audio rights. The first single, “Kalaavathi”, sung by Sid Sriram, was brought forward a day to 13 February 2022 after it leaked online. “Penny” followed on 20 March 2022.
Release and reception
The film was originally meant for Sankranti 2022 and then Ugadi, but the pandemic and production delays pushed it back to 12 May 2022. Reviews were mostly mixed, but it was a big commercial success.
