Geetha Govindam

Geetha Govindam is a 2018 Telugu-language romantic comedy written and directed by Parasuram and produced by GA2 Pictures. It stars Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles. Made on a small budget, it became a huge commercial success, and although critics found the story familiar, they praised its direction, performances and production values. For Mandanna, it was the breakthrough film of her Telugu career.

Story

The film is told as a flashback. Late one night, a woman named Nithya is stranded when her car breaks down, and the man who stops to help, Vijay Govind, begins to tell her his story.

Vijay is a college lecturer with traditional values who falls for a woman named Geetha after seeing her at a temple. By chance, she turns out to be his fellow passenger on a bus to Kakinada, where he is heading for his sister’s wedding arrangements. An unfortunate accident on the journey leaves Geetha convinced that he has behaved badly towards her, and she wants nothing to do with him. Then the two families’ wedding plans throw them together again, forcing them to work side by side. Whether Vijay can win back her trust, and what that costs him, is the heart of the film, and this summary leaves the rest for viewers.

Cast

The two leads are Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna. Reviewers also singled out the comic support from Vennela Kishore, Rahul Ramakrishna and Abhay Betiganti.

Music

Gopi Sundar composed the soundtrack, with lyrics by Ananta Sriram, Sri Mani and Sagar. Vijay Deverakonda made his debut as a singer on the film, performing the song “What the Life”. The single “Inkem Inkem Inkem Kaavaale”, sung by Sid Sriram, was released on 7 June 2018, and one critic described it as a new earworm. The full album followed on 21 June 2018 at a launch event at the JRC Convention Centre in Film Nagar, Hyderabad. Critics responded well to the music.

Release

The film’s release was first set for August, and in mid-May 2018 the makers confirmed the date as 15 August 2018. It premiered in the United States on 14 August, a day before its Indian release. According to the source, its theatrical rights were sold for ₹15 crore.

Box office

According to the source, Geetha Govindam was made on a budget of ₹5 crore and grossed ₹132 crore and its box-office verdict was an all-time blockbuster. It was also Rashmika Mandanna’s first film to cross ₹1 billion at the domestic box office.

Critical reception

Reviews were generally favourable. Critics acknowledged that the plot was predictable and the premise familiar, but credited Parasuram for avoiding melodrama, for his engaging screenplay and for the way he handled his leading man. The music, the humour and the chemistry between the two leads were frequently cited as the film’s strengths.

The film won Mandanna the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress – Telugu, and she also received a Best Actress nomination at the ceremony.
